What with promising all of these people he'd be in his office, Mitchell actually had to go to his office. At least all the Miley had been dealt with, and the TV was working again in the way that all good TVs should.

He also had that boombox now, though. He should probably return it to the music department. Soonish. You know.

... He'd managed to get a Best of the 60s Compilation sent in from Baltimore where George kept half his stuff. Chances of that box going back were small.

Shut up. He didn't have a girlfriend and getting one would likely end in death; he was allowed to live vicariously through other people's lives.

"Hmmh. Not sure 'interesting' is the right word."

Not that Jason wasn't interesting.

"Cute? Attractive?" Beat. "Or are we headed more in the vein of 'infuriating' and 'irritating'."

Somewhere, George was facepalming.

"I'd say all four, actually," Kate decided. "Sounds about right."

"Ahhh," Mitchell said, knowingly, "A teenage boy."

"I really don't think the characteristics were necessary for that revelation," she remarked. "Although it could've been a twenty-something, too."

"I'm not sure whether that's an insult or another appeal to my vanity."

[vanillajello]

"That had nothing to do with you at all." Pause. "And I'm not sure which one it would've been if it had been, either."

Mitchell snorted. "You're a real flatterer," he said, "You're lucky I'm old."

"That hasn't stopped me before." Oh, wait. Too much information. "Anyway. Yes. Awesome with the flattery, that's what I am."

"Thanks for sharing."

She was getting the mildly TMI'd deadpan.

"Last week someone accused me of not sharing enough," she told him with a faint smirk. "I guess I'm still trying to find a balance."

[chosehumanity]

"You are a student," Mitchell shot back. Firmly and teacherly. "I prefer to think of you as a floating head."

"God, Mitchell, if the island decides to take that literally, I will seriously hurt you."

Well, at least she didn't laugh at him. That was something.

"And if it helps, you can just put what I said, and that I even said it, straight onto the list of the many, many ways in which I'm messed up."

"Already done," he assured her.

See? They worked. Somehow.

"Although if you need a surrogate to beat up your boyfriend, I can always... call George."

They totally worked. In a weird way.

"What is it with me and offers of violence on my behalf? A few more and I'm gonna start worrying."

"Hey! I didn't offer to commit any violence. I'm just offering you George's services. He'll probably just cringe and run away anyway."

"And I have enough on-island defenders as it is. I don't need one that'd have to be called in."

She rolled her eyes. "I'm just glad around here people actually offer, instead of just deciding someone's ass needs to be kicked for me."

"I'm too old to go about assuming women want me to beat up their boyfriends," he assured Kate. "It only ends in more violence."

"I would've gone for 'humiliation' but yeah, that too." Because she was still young enough to prioritize it that way. "But there will be none of that. Good."
