"Which is rather a cold way of telling you that I care, isn't it? It seems a touch detached. I do care, I hope you realize. I'm only not quite so adept at saying it, but we've never relied on words, have we?"
"Yo, long time no see, right? I'm at Fast Eddie's and I kinda figured you might maybe wanna come down and play with me." Beat. "In a not-dirty fashion, though I won't object if you take your shirt off. Anyway, I'll probably be hanging by the Dance Dance Revolution machine if you do decide to show up. Okay, bye."
No, it wasn't a message that was actually meant for Mitchell.
... And so Mitchell, who had been perfectly fine up until the 'not-dirty' and 'I won't object if' parts, sent a very confused voicemail back.
And then spent about fifteen minutes debating whether or not to show up anyway. Considering she didn't answer his voicemail, though, he was starting to doubt the sense of that.
"Look, I don't know why you felt the need to call me to say you're not going to comment on my skin or the size of my trunk, whatever body part that's probably a euphemism for, but I'm going to assure you they're both just fine."
Leaving Mitchell a voicemail on Monday afternoon, Kate sounded... quiet. Shaken but calm enough.
"Hi, it's Kate. I, um, I c-- I can't come into work on Wednesday, I gotta go to England for, um..." There was a pause as she swallowed. "For Nathan's funeral." She exhaled an entirely joyless, humorless laugh. Nothing was funny, but it was so absurd to be saying those words. There was a longer pause as she shook her head at her own reactions. "So, uh. Sorry. Bye."

"Mitchell, it's Jack. Have you heard from Carl lately? Nothing important, he just seems to have moved and I wondered if he'd decided to chance home again. Call me when you have a moment."
It's Jack. So things in 1901 are changing -- my world's finally getting around to the American Revolution -- and I think I need to go there for a bit. We're behind on phones, but I'm emailing out a maildrop address that should work, or there's a telegraph in town.
Jack needed a break from the research, and writing and mailing postcards soothed his mind. It was, perhaps, best not to ask how the postcard he sent Jan. 10, 1902 was already in Mitchell's mailbox. The interdimensional post office had its ways.
Mitchell: Not dead yet, and please tell Kate that if she asks. Am in Paris chasing monsters. You know, for a change. (Remember how my world isn't meant to have werewolves? Need to revise that opinion.) But seem to be on verge of some political success. Will be back in touch soon. - Jack P.S. Observe technological marvels on converse.
