Office #26, Saturday

Parents' Weekend.

Mitchell had been happy to avoid the sudden influx of vampires by staying home during the picnic, but he was going to have to come out eventually - if anything, he had promised Kate he'd be around. On Saturday morning, he dragged himself out of the house to get to the office.

He didn't turn on the TV this time. Instead, he was spending most of the time in his office picking at his coffee and watching the door.

Kate grinned, now in a slightly more relaxed manner than before. "Don't tell her about the muffin bribes," she told Mitchell in a stage whisper before turning towards her mother. "Call me when you're done. Okay, bye!"

And then she disappeared out the door, going to look for her brother.

"So, Mr. Mitchell," Tara said, once Kate had left. "How's Kate doing? And I mean that in more than an academic sense. It's hard for me having her away from home."

"I think she's finding the time away challenging," Mitchell said. It was... going to be a thing, phrasing this so it didn't reflect badly back on Kate. "But she's coping very well."

Tara nodded. "I don't know how much she's told you about... her home life," she said. "Do you think the time away is doing her good?"

"She's... told me a few things about the problems involved at home," he said, trying to come at it as gently as he could. "But I think... it's helping her find some kind of grounding as to who she is. And that's a big thing."

"I know that my... condition... puts a lot of stress on the kids," Tara said, assuming that Kate had told him. "So I'm glad she's able to put that aside here."

"She's concerned about it," he admitted, "And worried about you, but... she's making the best of it."

"I get the sense that she trusts you, Mr. Mitchell," she said. "It would make me feel better knowing that she had an adult she could go to here."

"My office is always open," Mitchell said, shrugging his shoulders a bit. "I've been through a few things in my life, I know how complicated it can be."

Tara nodded. "Is she doing well in your class?"

"She's paying attention," he said, with a smile tugging on his mouth, "Except for when she's not. But she's sharp. She has a good brain up there."

Tara smiled. "Yeah. I'm hoping that she'll start using it more."

He laughed. "I don't think you've got anything to worry about, mrs. Gregson," Mitchell replied, "She seems eager to use it."

"That's good to hear," Tara said. "I've gotten a lot of reports through the years about Kate not working up to her full potential."

"She's got a long way to go until full potential," he said, his smile wry, "But most of us do. It takes some their entire lives. In comparison, Kate's really living it up."

Tara laughed a little. "I suppose that's good enough then."

"I think it is," he said, smile spreading.
