Mitchell's nerves hadn't quite settled yet, but every day made a repeat visit from Herrick less likely - at least for the forseeable future. So Wednesday found him laying out lesson plans, flicking through books, and only occasionally checking travel books for somewhere safer.

Just as a precaution. He had no real willingness to let his past drive him out of house and home.

"Your modesty is a staggering example to us all, Max," Mitchell told him, and nodded at a chair.

Max eyed the chair and sighed. He totally should have satt down without an invitation. He had been on a roll.

"So what have you been up to?" he asked. "You didn't get involved in that weirdness a couple of weeks ago, did you?"

"Only research," Mitchell said, showing no amusement at all at having been the one to show Max the chair. Really. "My sleeping was regular."

"Mine too," Max admitted. "Good thing, too. Didn't sound like a very fun place to me."

"To say the least. An island overran with vampires?"

Mitchell snorted.

"Arseholes must've ruined everything they could get their paws on."

"Apparently, yeah." Max shrugged. "Don't have them back home, but they sound unpleasant."

"Unpleasant?" Mitchell couldn't resist sharing. "More than that, my friend."

"Well, good riddance, I suppose." Max shrugged. "Everything worked out alright in the end, after all."

Except, you know, all of that emotional fallout stuff. Fortunately Max was good at ignoring that sort of thing.

Mitchell shrugged, once. He was about to go on a tangent - George would be able to see it coming from a mile away. "Bloody vampires," he said, "There's always some twat sticking his head up deciding to go take over the world," no issues there, really, "every couple of decades."

"This happens pretty regularly where you're from, then? Do they just not learn from the past or something?"

"Most of them don't even bother to learn about the past." Mitchell stretched out his limbs. "...or so I've heard."

"Hear a lot about vampires where you're from?" Max was actually curious rather than digging. He didn't really care about Mitchell's dark and mysterious past.

Even if he did have vague plans to get the man smashed some night so he'd spill his guts.

Hey, that sounded like fun! Kind of. Once Mitchell got his head around that 'Max doesn't really care' issue.

He still had some trouble with that.

"It's a hobby."

"And here I thought your hobby was the whole TV thing." Max grinned. "It seems you are a man of hidden depths." Unlike one Antillar Maximus who was pretty obviously shallow.

"Now, Max, in this century, the 'TV thing' is not a hobby," he said, happily detaching from his rant, "It's a way of life."

"I'd scoff at you, but I'm afraid you might be right." Max quirked an eyebrow. "Modeling shows."

"No modeling shows," Mitchell said, rolling his eyes. "Unless you're planning on buying a parka and spending the rest of your life in bed eating food from the Mac."

"I'm sure that was a really cutting comment," Max smirked, "but I have no idea what you said."

"That's all right," Mitchell said, friendly and all, "At least I'm satisfied."

"It's reassuring to know that you're so easily satisfied."
