Office #26, Monday

Last week had been uneventful. Mitchell wouldn't mind if this week would be, too. He suspected it wouldn't be too long before something would shake things up again, because that inevitably happened, but he was enjoying the settle-down.

One more class to teach, and to be utterly honest, he still had no ideas. He would find something in the end, but right now, he was more preoccupied with the class he was slated to teach next term.

His notepad had the word I have to find a good meta for CASABLANCA written on it in very big letters. What was the point of being in a famous movie if you didn't get to share the wealth, after all?

"A certain allure?" Mitchell asked, with a laugh. "Look at yourself. You're doing it right now." He didn't sound like he thought it was a bad thing, per se.

He'd like to say that that was what he was doing, but he was fairly sure that if he went off the island, he'd run into one vampire or another who'd been touched by Herrick's propaganda machine already.

"True, true," Max grinned. "And it's been rather nice." There were all those attractive females, after all. And slow motion.

"Seeing the sights, trying the local food," he continued, "Trying the local women..."

He knew Max by now. "The essentials don't change. Just how fast it moves."

It didn't take long for anyone to figure Max out, really. He wasn't all that complicated, after all.

"And you have to admit that the local women around here are pretty spectacular." He might have completely forgotten about the questions that had brought him to Mitchell's office.

It was probably a good thing for Max that Mitchell had some inhuman skills towards listening to people yammer on on a single topic for hours and hours. And enjoying it. "Gorgeous," he agreed, "You make any 'friends' yet?"

Max leaned back and grinned. "One or two." He sighed nostalgically.

"How about you?"

"No one yet," he said, with a quick shake of his head. "I'm, er, biding my time." Really.

"You want me to introduce you around?" Max offered. He was helpful that way, even if it would mean risking someone preferring Mitchell to himself. Max was a generous soul!

"Don't worry." Mitchell might have huddled. But only a slight bit. "I can work it on my own."

"Well, if you ever change your mind you know where to find me," Max grinned easily. "So if you haven't met anyone yet, what have you been doing with your time?"

"Oh," he sighed, "Just the arduous tasks of watching television and frustrating my housemate."

He nodded at his desk. "And planning my next class."

"Where are you living, anyway?" Max asked. "Because housemates around here are... interesting."

"On the outskirts," he replied. "Serendipity Street, it's called. My housemate's a hologram. Mental," he snuck another crisp, "Isn't it?"

"Your housemate's a what, now?" Max asked, frowning. Someone hadn't watched enough scifi yet.

"A hologram. He's literally made of light."

Occasionally, light that could assault you, but Mitchell would write that off as a lark and a half.

"That sounds... odd. Even for this place."

"Says the man who calls on the elements when he's made a night's bender," Mitchell said, with a laugh. "Holograms were being talked about by writers dating back to the forties and fifties. Like artificial ghosts."

"Hey, that's perfectly normal," Max waves. Because it was!

"And I've never been much of a reader."

"There's another reason why film was invented."

"It is much less work," Max agreed happily. And you could pretend to be watching while doing... more interesting things.
