Office #26, Tuesday

It was his second week of actual office hours, so of course Mitchell had taken the time to set up a TV (in case Max decided to show up) and secure a few bags of crisps (which he could eat out of when he wasn't looking scholarly). A part of him was still mildly confused by being allowed this position to begin with, but he would take it.

He leaned back in his chair and surveyed his estate. So to speak.

"The idea is to sit back and watch," Mitchell said, and put a bottle of soda up on his desk. He'd gone out for groceries this morning, yes. "If you can handle that."

He punched a button on the remote. The TV turned on.

"Just watch?" Max asked, eyebrows flickering upward. "I think this is sounding more and more like my kind of activity."

As the TV announced that 'You're the next contestant on...' Max frowned a bit at it. "So explain to me what is going on."

"This? This is a game show," Mitchell said, shooting him a grin. He did realise what he was asking, though. "TV and film are composed of moving images. TV is different than film in that it's smaller, most stretches of moving images are shorter, and you don't have to go anywhere to watch it. That, and sometimes it's live, although that's gotten less over the decades."

Actually, Max had been asking the first question Mitchell had answered. He wasn't really a very technical guy.

"Ah," he nodded even though he was pretty sure he didn't fully understand. "And is all of it this... game show?" Because it didn't seem all that interesting.

Neither was Mitchell, but sometimes he let his enthusiasm - to a point - get the best of him. "Game shows are meant for when you're absolutely out of grey matter," he said, "Let's switch it."

He flicked the channel down to what appeared to be an old Western.

Max watched for a few seconds before frowning. "Whoever made this seems to be confused."

"Yeah?"

"If I'm going to watch something for entertainment, I want there to be women in it."

Obviously.

Mitchell chuckled. "All right, mate, I can help you there," he said, flipping a few more channels until--

Swimsuits. Beaches. Slow-mo...

"I appreciate--" Max cut off abruptly.

And he leaned forward in his chair, open bag of crisps forgotten.

"Oh, Great Furies," he whispered.

Mitchell's reply? Nothing but the happy crunching of crisps.

"How do they..." Max waved helplessly at the slow-motion.

Because that was amazing.

"Careful now." He tilted his head sideways to shoot Max a look. "It's called slow-motion."

Okay, Mitchell was far too used to it to really react to it anymore, but Max's astonishment was too funny not to mock.

"Great Furies," Max muttered. "It had never occurred to me that..." he waved. "Who came up with this?"

Because Max wanted to buy the man a drink!

"Eh. Some guy back in the early 20th century," Mitchell said, with a kind of idleness (and consideration of a crisp) that you could really only manage if you'd been alive when the whole thing happened.

Not that you could tell that easily, but it was that kind.

"It's such a brilliant concept," Max shook his head, careful not to let that take his eyes off the screen. "I wonder why I never thought of it."

"You don't have films," Mitchell pointed out, "That may have had something to do with it."

"But the slow motion..." Max shook his head again. "I can just draw on the wind." All that wasted time.

Even if that didn't make a whole lot of sense to most people.

Which might explain why Mitchell shot him a worried look. "Don't draw on the wind in here," he said. "I don't know how long it'll take to air out."

Max stared at Mitchell in confusion for a moment, then burst out laughing. "Oh, heh, sorry. I forget that people around here can't furycraft sometimes."

"Furycraft?" Mitchell was still watching him.

After a few seconds of that, though, he popped another crisp in his mouth.

"It's the ability to draw on the elemental furies to... do stuff. Wind can be used to speed yourself up." Max flashed a smirk, "Which makes everything around you slow down."

"Huh," Mitchell judged, and went back to looking at the television. "So can you do anything else?"

"Lots of stuff," Max said off-handedly. "I'm not the most powerful crafter ever, but I can handle a lot of the basics." Actually, while he didn't talk about it much, Max was rather ridiculously strong when it came to most branches of furycrafting.

"And how strong are these basics?"

Mitchell would have continued on his line of questioning, but he was distracted by a case of incoming breasts.

Max shrugged. "Pretty strong, I guess? Especially if you can craft multiple elements. Earth for strength, metal for endurance, wind for speed, wood for stealth, water for healing, fire for..." he snorted. "Fire's pretty straight-forward. Though you can also draw on it for emotional strength."
