Honolulu Heights, Friday

So several people had been promised a housewarming party - and George had managed to convince Mitchell not to invite everyone in the whole neighbourhood, so chances were it might not even end in disaster - which would double as a 'welcome back, Annie!' party.

That meant tea. And biscuits. But mostly loads of tea. (And little finger sandwiches; Annie had insisted, claiming they were 'classy'.)

And leis. Annie had been vocal about those, too.

But: now the place was ready, after a week of running around and shopping and arguing and laughing and then running around some more. Time to celebrate.

"You look dashing," Kate noted with an amused as she sidled on up to him, drink in hand. Drinks were important, okay. "I'm gonna refrain from inappropriate lei jokes, though."

Well, refrain from them with him. Bod was probably not going to be safe from them.

"And for that, I thank you," Mitchell said, though he sounded less 'sarcastic' and more 'jovial' today. After a pause, he pointed past her. "There's Annie, by the way," he added. "She still can't be seen, but she's here."

Kate's expression turned a little more wry as she glanced back, with a little wave, even. She'd been expecting not being able to see Annie, but it still sucked.

"Yeah, I'm still not special enough to have a sight or whatever," she said, as she turned more towards Mitchell again. "Probably gonna make you guys interpret for me a lot."

Like she was gonna let this stop her from talking to Annie. Please.

"I'm happy to do it," Mitchell replied, smiling a little. "She was very intense about the leis, by the way."

Kate snorted. "Well, that's only highly necessary," she replied with a grave nod. "I mean, who's heard of a fake Hawaiian housewarming without leis?"

Mitchell grinned. "It does lend a certain air to the place, doesn't it?"

"A certain demented charm," Kate drawled, though a light smile stayed on. With the inhabitants, 'demented charm' was pretty much as normal as anything was going to get. "Beats Kansas. We had no leis in Kansas."

"Maybe you should paint a mural in Kansas," Mitchell offered. "Spice it up a bit."

Snort. "Uh, yeah, no," she said. "I'm pretty sure Charmaine would complain about paint fumes being bad for the baby, for one thing."

"Aw, come on," Mitchell cajoled. "You know what we did the first day Annie was back? We hula'd."

Solemnly, he said that. Yes. "In front of the mural."

Excuse Kate for laughing. A lot. It was just that she was pretty delighted at that mental image.

"Seriously?"

Mitchell pointed at the mural.

"Can you look at that and not feel the urge to hula?"

"I once spent a week in actual Hawaii and didn't feel the urge to hula," Kate retorted. "Face it, Mitchell, I might not be a hula kind of girl, even if you are."

Yes, she'd just called him a girl. He could deal with it.

"Oh, come on," Mitchell returned, unfazed by the whole girl-calling thing. "Not even a little bit? You've got the lei and everything."

"But not a grass skirt," she pointed out. "I only hula in a grass skirt."

This was actually true-ish. Because she'd once thrown a third floor theme party, excpt she couldn't remember whether she'd done the hula even then.

"We could make you one," Mitchell suggested, straight-faced.

Annnd here came the snickering.

"... Are you offering to make me a grass skirt?"

"No," Mitchell corrected, "I'm offering to get George to make you a grass skirt. That's a vast difference."

"Yeah, in the entertainment value," Kate returned without missing a beat. "His spazziness gives me a headache."
